Review
“David Landau has produced an excellent text in Lighting for Cinematography which manages to cover the practicalities of production, the technical aspects of lighting and vitally the artistic importance of this work. Lighting for Cinematography is constructed to appeal and be of value to the practitioner at all levels; it is equally full of detail for careful consideration and quick hints and images for review before filming. Landau's book is helpfully crammed with instructional diagrams and the chosen images act as exemplars of technique. Lighting for Cinematography contains a series of production skills and helpful hints and exercises; these aspects are exceptionally helpful to the student of film wishing to improve their understanding and technique. I would highly recommend Lighting for Cinematography to those to wish to learn more about this field and to all those interested in the technique and process of film making.†―Robert Edgar, Senior Lecturer in Film and TV Production, York St John University, UK“A master class in cinematography! David Landau's conversational tone mixed with 35 years of technical experience and aesthetic prowess results in a very accessible text that should be cherished by students and professionals alike. Whether he is describing the process of lighting through a window with a 1200 HMI Par with a double scrim, 250 diffusion and 1/2 CTO or describing his method of achieving a firelight effect with several 250W Inkies with a mixture of amber and orange gels and run through a flicker box, Landau's multiple accounts from his work in the field give this book a much appreciated practicality and voice of authority that is invaluable for the emerging cinematographer. †―Harlan Bosmajian, Assistant Professor of Cinematography, Emerson College, USA and Local 600 Director of Photography“This unique approach has been needed for a long time and there is simply no other lighting book like this in print.†―Peter Stein, ASC, Student Filmmakers

Too good! There's more boots on the ground know-how and common sense packed into this book than I'll ever need to use, but I know I'll never need to read another book on this topic to feel comfortable with film lighting. It's a complete education on the topic written from the perspective of a master craftsman. Everyone should read this book to appreciate the skill and talent that goes into the movies and shows behind the scenes that's taken for granted.
Great book. I'm a commercial photographer (still photography) and able to apply most of the book to my trade. Aside from lighting technique and explanation, there is plenty info on grip to help you run a smooth and safe studio. I will definitely recommend this to other photogs for lighting education.Only thing that stands out that could use improvement are the images used for demonstrating the concepts. That aside, it's a really great resource.
I've been behind cameras for about 8 years now. And this book taught me more in its 270-ish pages than 4 years of film school, and a dozen films I've shot COMBINED. Truly, the knowledge contained therein is indispensible. It's comprehensive, eloquently described, broken down in a totally trackable way, and the information remains relevant in this moment, which is impressive, as our technology is constantly evolving and growing.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to bring their Cinematography or Lighting skills up SEVERAL notches. It did for me!
I make short films with DSLRs. I was not familiar with all the different types of lights and setups this book describes. The author did a good job of explaining the subject in the print medium. A lot of care was taken to illustrate the reasons for the lighting approach for each scene. The author's real world stories and experiences translate nicely. I like how the emphasis was on independent filmmaking and not Hollywood budget type shoots. Many thanks to David for teaching me some cinematography!
Being a 40yr vet in film production...I'm always looking for a good training manual or a book for my students. The book is written in an easy to follow manner and keeps your interest. I strongly recommend for those new to the industry or those just having fun with gorilla filming.
Fantastic non-technical overview of lighting, with several different scenarios and anecdotes. Paired with the Set Lighting Technician's Handbook, one can receive a relatively encompassing education of lighting for cinematographers. Landau goes through different daylight interior/exterior and night time interior/exterior with stills to illustrate each of the his written examples. A great book on the design of lighting, but definitely needs to be paired with the Set Lighting Technician's Handbook for a full education. Great read!
Product condition wise is arrived pristine and well kept, no folds or wrinklesProduct though, Overall all it is a good book. Cover lighting from a very visual and representative standpoint. Other lighting books tend to cover from a scientific and technical perspective this book walks you through relative lighting positions and theory practices instead. A must have for anyone who is looking to get into cinematography or simply looking to understand light a little better
"Lighting for Cinematography" is an essential resource and one of the best references on lighting I have read! David Landau has put in a tremendous amount of work, insight and expertise making it an invaluable tool for the craft of lighting. This book is a must have for my production classes at Bowling Green State University! Each chapter includes production exercises: "putting it into practice" allowing the reader a practical, hands on experience to practice the topics discussed.
