Here's a prime example of a book that could have been a near-masterpiece with a little bit of careful editing.I'm going to mirror the sentiments of both the positive AND negative reviews of this book. If you're interested in details for the later-model B-52s, this "manual" is a treasure trove. I've been collecting Haynes books for a while, and this one contains the largest amount of raw technical detail of the 30 or so I've owned. There are dozens of diagrams, depicting in minute detail many of the aircraft's systems, detailed instrument panel layouts, full-color flow charts, and cutaway views of the aircraft's arrangement. There are three chapters written largely by a former B-52 pilot, gunner, and maintainer, which provide an interesting insight into the aircraft's operation. The bad news is the book, as a whole is rather sloppily edited and fact-checked. When one considers that at least three former B-52 crewmen were involved in its creation, I can only shake my head and wonder why. Besides the errors mentioned by others, we get whoppers like the plane having a 312,197-gallon fuel capacity (how does it get off the ground?), Barksdale AFB being in Los Angeles, instead of Louisiana, and an Adobe Acrobat zoom tool in the middle of a diagram on page 142!That said, this book is still worth owning for anyone interested in the B-52, but a little editing would have gone a long way.

Thankfully, the book's title is misleading. This book is NOT a shop manual. Not that you've got an aging B-52 in your backyard that you'd like to restore. Or perhaps you do. But if you do, you're gonna need more than a Hayne's manual and a set of Snap-On tools. This book is a very nice tribute to a venerable aircraft. Lots of color pics, lots of explanations of history, lots of B/W schematics--but nothing that would help you maintain the aircraft. If you've already got a notion of how this bird works, this book will give you some excellent insight, but it won't help you piece one back together.I bought this book for my Dad, who flew B-52s back in the day. The book has lots of lovely pics. My Dad is pretty sure his face is in the book somewhere--he just hasn't found it yet.

The details in this book keep you going back for more. As the B-52 is my favorite aircraft, I have numerous books on it, but this book excells with drawings and pictures I've not seen before. A great reference book! For a previous reviewer, "all marks"/"all marques" is a British thing. What we call models, and designate by letters, such as B-52D, F, G, H, the British call "marks". Their marked are designated by letters and/or numbers, depending on when in history an aircraft was in service. Consider the AVRO Vulcan, it is designated as a Vulcan B Mk. 2 (Mark 2). In WWII, a/c such as the Hurricane were designated, Hurricane Mk.I, Mk. IIC, Mk.IID, etc.

As a couple of other reviewers noted, there are technical mistakes in this book. To be honest, I have yet to find a book about the B-52 that was error-free, and that includes my old technical orders. However, to look at the glass as half full, there are three areas that are worthy of note. There are photographs in this book that I've never seen before, and I have many books on the aircraft. Captions aside, they photos themselves are a very good representation of the B-52 family. Most of the diagrams are straight out of the TOs or CAST manual, and I have never seen them anywhere else. For someone well versed on aircraft systems, this is a gold find. Interrelationships between systems are rarely covered in any book other than what the crews use to fly the plane.I could not find anything of critique in the first-hand accounts by the veteran fliers. The pilot's account was completely accurate, and very reminiscent of my time flying in the plane from the navigator positions. Gunners had been eliminated for almost ten years by the time I transferred to the B-52, which made the gunner narrative priceless. 'B-52 Fire Control Specialist' had been number one on my dream sheet in BMT many years ago, and the account of the life of a gunner was bittersweet for me personally. With a second edition, I think that this book could become a standard for technical descriptions for the B-52, bridging the gap between purely historical accounts and the readers who want more.

AF colonel 27 yrs and longtime B-52 fan, had to add this to my collection, love it, well done. Critics are overly harsh, this book is accurate and well done by some british guys ( can you say aluminium?) forgive british spelling, etc and enjoy.

Great Books to get Info on Development, History, and Use of the aircraft. These books are not only a lot of fun but may have been classified in their days.

With all due respect to the first reviewer I found this book to be a lot of fun. I too am former military and I'm sure if I read a book about the AAVP7A-1 Assault Amphibian Vehicle I could spot quite a few errors as well but for the average reader this book is very interesting. It has great pics and awesome diagrams and yes it was printed in England so some of the terminology is a little different than what we are used to. If you are on the fence based on the low stars don't be, just order it, you will like it. Unless maybe you are an aerospace engineer that worked on the B-52 or something.

Had had flown B-52's most of my career.I wanted to keep these stories in my life. This reading gave me much pleasure.
