*Starred Review* This atlas brings an understanding of the Civil War military campaigns in a graphic way. Not just military history buffs but anyone interested in the Civil War will find it captivating. The “About This Book” section is essential to understanding the maps. The introduction, “Mapping the War,” covers the unsung heroes, the mapmakers. The description of mapmaking tools, techniques, and even dangers adds a layer of understanding to the maps, which are a combination of around 85 rare period items (many published here for the first time) and 35 new views commissioned by the National Geographic Society. The atlas’s five chapters cover the five years of war and highlight the battles. Each chapter opens with a 2-page “The War at a Glance” presenting an overview, a map locating major events, a chronology, and a number of documentary photographs. Major battles and campaigns are then described. For each, there are a small locator map, a time line, and one or more larger maps (often from the Civil War era), with explanatory text keyed to map locations. The major battles, such as Antietam and Gettysburg, have multiple pages with different maps. For example, 12 pages and 6 maps are devoted to Gettysburg. More than 320 photographs, battlefield sketches, and other illustrations are scattered throughout the pages. Additional features include 8 biographical sidebars and 11 “Order of Battle” boxes. Three comprehensive maps of battles are contained in an appendix. A list of readings and an index complete the work. National Geographic has a high standard for atlases, and this one does not disappoint. It stands out from other Civil War atlases because of its use of archival maps, and the reproduction of the maps is amazing. The narrative is informative, and the photographs, illustrations, and other artwork add an important dimension. This is an essential purchase for all libraries with any interest in the Civil War. --Abbie Landry

A beautiful NGS volume with hundreds of pages of full color maps. The problem is, about half of them are maps from the period - great for the history of cartography, but useless for understanding the war (details too small, and compass directions often spun around). The other half are contemporary NGS maps of the battles - more useful, but almost all of battlefields and not of strategic movement. I returned this item and plan to buy the NGS single map of the Civil War instead.

Exactly what I was looking for!As I am doing - out of personal interest - some investigations on the civil war and on the general history of the States I was looking for a graphical presentation of the campaigns and the history of this fanal in the history ot the USA.The presentation is Class A and the homogeneous style of the NG Maps and the additonal historical maps give a great deal of information of how this conflict waved hence and forth.I am now reading and looking through this Atlas and enjoy it a great deal.My personal resumeé: Absolutely worth buying and studying the information. One remark to the packaging: I got it delivered after almost one month of delivering time (I reside in Europe) and the package was almost completely open and part of the book was deformed - I do not know how the postal services work, but this is not what I expected. The book itself is neither much inflicted nor destroyed but this minor defect would clearly reduce the reselling value. I did not let this influence my review, but it has to be told, anyway.

I was looking for a book that would have maps for battles I'm reading about in other historys (i.e., Shelby Foote's 3-volume, The Civil War, A Narrative). I am not that interested in period maps, but I'm not opposed to them either. This book exceeded my expectations because it has both period and modern maps AND it has nutshell descriptions of the historical context of each major battle plus fairly detailed descriptions of the battles themselves. So, while not as detailed as Foote on individual battles or the cast of characters involved, this book does an excellent job of putting each major battle into context, describing how the battle unfolded, who was involved, and why the battle was important. After you read the first two volumes of Foote, some of the references to earlier battles become a little hazy. All you need to do when that happens is open this book and refresh your recollection. As I said, this book was exactly what I was hoping it would be - plus a little bit more. The only slight downside is the dust jacket. To be honest, I'm afraid I'll rip or mar it. But I guess that's what dust jackets are for. Would definitely recommend this one. I'd buy it again.

But a little light for the dedicated CW buff. It's an interesting perspective, showing the types of maps that the commanders had to utilize as they made their plans. But I was expecting detailed maps of the major battles, of the type found in Bradley Gottfried's collections on Antietam and Gettysburg, available here on Amazon, or what Steven Stanley produces for the Civil War Trust. As other reviews state, this is primarily a collection of maps contemporary to the period, with all of their flaws, accompanied by high level descriptions of the action. If you want the detail necessary to see how specific battles progressed, you'll need to look elsewhere.

Wow! First, the size of the book is large and the photos and maps are typical Nat Geo high quality. If you are a Civil War buff, or like American history, or curious, then this is a great book to just browse through. Recommended.

This was a huge disappointment. I expected the high quality maps generally associated with National Geographic, but this is an almost worthless collection of mainly old map reproductions, pictures, and a little text about each major campaign. What made it worse was that the names of most of the features are unreadable, both because of small print and the fact that most of the old map names were hand written. I bought this as a supplement to the important histories (like Shelby Foote's) so I could locate rivers, towns and other geographic features I had not heard of. A better book is the US War Department's book "Official Military History of the Civil War".If you have never read any other book on the Civil War, this one MAY be useful, but mainly, it is a coffee table book.

Book is utterly FANTASTIC! I've had it now for roughly a month, and I've placed all my other books to the side, and have dedicated ALL of my reading efforts to this book. Battle by Battle, the starting and end points of Brigades, Strategies, just fantastically done. If you are into Civil War History in ANY way, please do yourself a favor, and purchase this book.

Great book. The large format is easy to read and there are plenty of facts about the Civil War. Plenty of photographs and maps showing troop positions and movements during the battles. My only complaint is the use of period maps. Most of them are so faded and discolored they are too hard to read and don't give any valuable in formation.
