Liana Lowenstein is a Clinical Social Worker, Certified Play Therapist-Supervisor, and Certified TF-CBT Therapist who is known internationally for her best-selling books including: Creative Interventions for Troubled Children & Youth (1999); Creative Interventions for Children of Divorce (2006a); Creative Interventions for Bereaved Children (2006b); Creative Family Therapy Techniques (2010); Cory Helps Kids Cope with Sexual Abuse (2014); and Creative CBT Interventions for Children with Anxiety (2016). The reviews for this book were so promising, but the reality is very disappointing. This book feels outdated in a bad way (I probably should have expected that) and many of the directives involve literally bribing kids with food to get them to talk...not what I am looking to do in my clinical work. Other directives are overly cheesy and it would be challenging to get even a young child to buy in to it. I honestly will not be able to use anything in this book and plan to return it.
This book has been a lot of help! Most of the interventions are simple and require simply making copies, while other require more forethought and planning, like purchasing special games or props (a specific board game, poker chips, prizes, specific toys, etc.). In any case, this book has been a lot of help and the kids have loved the interventions I have tried. More importantly, I was able to get to know my clients better and find out important things I probably would not have found out otherwise. I highly recommend this book for beginner therapists, therapists w/ limited experience working w/ children, and/or anyone who wants to learn a few interesting interventions.
Very good resource book I found informative while pursuing my degree in occupational therapy, and still a fine book I have returned to since as I find it highly useful in my current job within a school setting. Certainly not a dust catcher and one I would recommend!
There are so many easy to use tools in the book. They can be modified for many different uses/situations.
So helpful in the mental health counseling field when working with kids, would definitely recommend.
This book has many ideas for useful activities to use with children, as individuals, in small groups or in families. The section with assessment activities was especially good. There is a good reference section at the end of the book.
Use these activities with students all the time. Great stuff.
VERY GOOD BOOK! A must have in every therapists' bookshelf; bery practicle examples and easy to apply. A must have!
