Enjoyable as far as textbooks go. Very concise and informative on each topic. "Clashing views" makes the contrast seem starker than it should in the case of certain topics, such as "should special education be redefined and redesigned?" (That debate turns out to be mostly about labels, everyone ultimately wants the same thing for students.) But overall, the book was educational without being repetitive or annoying.
I've been reading this book for a grad class and it is one of the worst books I have had to endure. The author will take a look at various topics in special education and present an article from a pro side and one from the con side. The problem is that many of the articles do not match up to really "oppose" each other. For example, there is a section which asks if "evidence based practice is sufficient for students with autism" and provides 2 articles. The Pro side provides an argument, the con side does not mention EBP. The Con side talks about the variations among ASDs and also details the struggle with insurance companies... but these two really have nothing to do with each other. If this were a book based random articles related to special education, it might not be so bad. But the fact that I am looking at this and trying to pick a side drives me insane.
The text lists current issues in special education and provides an expert debate for each side of the issue so you can not only be informed about all the facets of any given SpEd topic but you can also intelligently make a decision about which side you think is correct and be able to effectively argue your point. Great resource for any school staff member or education student.
Great content. But for the exorbitantly high price one would expect a proofread book. Typos, repeated paragraphs, sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. I know, you need the book for a class. The publisher knows this too. That's why they don't care. They CAN GET AWAY WITH IT.
A conglomeration of papers with varying view points. Some of the papers are so poorly written that they site fictious characters as real and use data and studies that don't support their claim. The fact that some colleges use this book as a course text is appalling.
Great book, used it for a class I took this summer.
The arguments in this book do not relate. Poorly constructed.
