Review

“A feminist celebration of the magic of womanhood.Fans of The Princess Saves Herself in this One will be thrilled with The Witch Doesn’t Burn in this One! The poet spreads her wings in her second book, moving from an intimate portrait of girlhood into a complex portrayal of feminism. Mixing mysticism and lore, the poems follow a natural progression from the themes explored in Lovelace’s debut. With connections to current events and real life, The Witch Doesn’t Burn in this One, expands on Lovelace’s woman-as-magic motif and moves beyond the personal narrative to a heartbreaking and uplifting portrayal of womanhood through the ages.” (Danika Stone, author of All the Feels)"To everyone in range of this tweet: go and buy THE WITCH DOESN’T BURN IN THIS ONE by the immensely gifted Amanda Lovelace (@ladybookmad). I don’t care if you don’t usually read poetry. You will after you read this. You’re welcome. #TeamWitch" (Deborah Harkness, author of All Souls Trilogy)“In this liberating collection of poetry and prose, Amanda Lovelace taps into the suffering of our mothers and spares us none of the gory details. Writing from a place of anger and tenderness, she expertly crafts a coven you’ll want to be a part of. Lovelace’s The Witch Doesn’t Burn In This One is a self-love potion for the women in your life.” (Trista Mateer, author of Honeybee)"Filled with glorious imagery and incredible fire, this beautiful book is exactly what every woman and every survivor needs to read right now. Amanda Lovelace takes poetry to a whole new level with The Witch Doesn't Burn In This One, revealing her impressive skills with language and art once again as well as her breathtaking evolution as a writer. With a heart-wrenching yet empowering take on the very real and prevalent issues in society today whilst weaving magic with her pen, The Witch Doesn't Burn In This One is Amanda Lovelace's triumphant return as a poet, and what a splendid return it is!" (Nikita Gill, author of Your Soul Is a River)"Amanda Lovelace's new book is a flammable clarion call, a prophetic and ominous text depicting the day fast approaching (or already here?) that the women of the world reclaim all the fire in it as their own. Frantic and powerful, clear and accessible, Amanda has given the world a good reason to read her poetry again. Beware of matches." (Iain S. Thomas, author of I Wrote This for You)“This book spoke to my seething soul. Full of powerful feminist rage and wisdom, The Witch Doesn't Burn In This One made me want to set fire to the world and dance in its ashes. I'm buying a copy for all my female friends!” (Sandhya Menon, New York Times bestselling author of When Dimple Met Rishi)"What's the most dangerous thing women can do? Love themselves enough to fight back. Amanda Lovelace's new poetry collection is a fiery, accessible call-to-arms in a time where young women need every rebellious spark." (Nicole Brinkley, bookseller at Oblong Books & Music)

"here's the tricky thing about fire: it stays soft even while it destroys"Amanda blew me away again with her poetry. "witch" was a battle cry for #MeToo and the feminist movement in general. More than that, it was a unique and powerful collection of poetry. Amanda has grown as a poetess since "princess" and as her friend and reader that is so cool to see. Her writing is unflinchingly honest - I think that is part of what makes her books so popular. They are so deeply human and relatable. Anyway, an easy 5/5 for this fiery collection.

Now this was bad ass and I want more!!I knew I would love Amanda’s second collection of poetry but I never imagined I would love it this much.I cried, I laughed and I felt empowered. I closed this book and felt like I could go out and hurt someone. Not in the sense that I would want to but reading these poems made me feel that I would be able to defend myself and/or cause harm if someone tried to hurt me first. I haven’t really felt that from the previous poetry books I’ve read, so this was a glorious feelingI almost read this entire book on the release day but held back because I wanted to savor every word and forget that once I was finished, I would have to wait a year for the next installment. I very much look forward to the third collection.I’m glad to have more work from Amanda coming and I’m super excited to see her work evolve and grow even more

Actually never knew I liked poetry until I found her first brook “the princess saves herself in this one”. I highly recommend both reads for any woman who has survived any sort of trauma in their lives.

I read The Princess Saves Herself in This One and was over the moon in love with it, took pictures of the poems unrelated to most and shared them when people needed them and recommended her story to everyone. My standard for this book was set so high, and it just been feel as powerful to me. I enjoyed the book but it didn't capture me the same way as Princess did. She's a fantastic poet who's not afraid to use her voice, but I didn't feel the same connection with this collection of words as I did the others, even when I agreeded with the message behind them.

I really wanted to love this book. I’ve found being a victim of various types of abuse reading/ poetry can be therapudic. However I can’t help but feel like there’s a lot of anti man subjects. Which I feel was a little off putting. The poetry is beautiful and I really like a lot of the poems. From from a feminist perspective I have to be honest in saying I feel it comes off to be a little anti man. I feel it’s suggestive in all the poems about sexual and domestic abuse that man is the villain which can be true in some cases but I don’t think it’s a necessarily a positive piece of literature for healing.

In Amanda Lovelace's first poetry collection, I felt as if she was walking me through the events of her life. Showing me the path she had to take to become the person she is now. In this new collection, I felt as if she was helping me navigate my own life. This time showing how I can take control of this world and this life and do something great with it.I'd highly recommend this collection to poetry lovers but also to people who might not necessarily pick up a poetry book. You'll enjoy it either way because I guarantee you'll find something in it to help you relate. These were my favorites in the collection: "there are some things i just have to do for me.", "the hollow-girl.", "she.", and "the sign you've been for III."

It’s not as good as the first book. I did like it, and it did have its moments, but there was just a little too much man hate for my taste. I understand where Lovelace is coming from - women have always been oppressed in some way by men - but there were too few poems that stated that not EVERY man is bad. Again, I get where she was coming from, and I agreed with a lot of her poems, but there was just a few too many of said poems. So, one star was lost because it wasn’t as good as the first one and one was lost because I didn’t always agree/support the message Lovelace was sending.

The poems feel new and old at the same time. They reflect the issues that women have always been dealing with yet in a contemporary manner and within a contemporary context. There are witches within the poems and on the pages. They just may go by different names these days. Yet those of us who remember, who look into a mirror and see their reflections looking back at us, we know. We remember.
