Mother-son writing team "Charles Todd" has published a very good marketing tool for their faithful readers, "Tales: Short Stories Featuring Ian Rutledge and Bess Crawford". The book consists of four short stories - two for each character - as well as an "sneak peek" at the new Bess Crawford book, "A Pattern of Lies", due out in August, 2015. The four short stories take up 67% of the book; the excerpt is the final third of the book. (Don't you just love ebooks?)I had read all four short stories before and they are a pretty good introduction to the two characters. In one, "Cold Comfort", a new reader to the series meets Ian Rutledge and Cpl Hamish MacLeod, the good soldier Rutledge was forced to shoot for insubordination and whose haunting "voice" Rutledge carries with him after the war. The other story is about a crime/kidnapping Rutledge solves after the war when he's back at Scotland Yard. The two Bess Crawford stories are similar. One introduces Bess as a child living with her parents in India and the other takes place during her wartime nursing service.I've been reading "Charles Todd" since their first book, which I think was Inspector Rutledge. The two series take place at just slightly different times; Inspector Rutledge is written in post-WW1 England (with flash backs to wartime and before-the-war), while Bess Crawford is written during the Great War with occasional flashbacks. I keep waiting for the two series to merge somehow; there is one character who is the same in both books - Melinda Crawford. So, if you're looking for a bit of "Charles Todd", as well as jump on the new novel, by all means buy this Kindle ebook. If you've already read the four stories and it's after the new novel has been published, then I think you can pass on this ebook.

TALES, Short Stories Featuring Ian Rutledge and Bess Crawford, by Charles Todd is a collection in e-book form of four short stories followed by two chapters excerpted from A Pattern of Lies that was to be published 8/18/15.In the first story, Kidnapping, young Inspector Rutledge solves the case of a young kidnapped girl in 1920's London to the partial chagrin of his superior.Story two, The Girl on the Beach, is solved by Nurse Bess Crawford during the war year of 1916.In story three, Cold Comfort, we again find Rutledge active, but now a lieutenant in the British Army in the WW I trenches where he must attempt to save one of his men from being killed as a result of a supposed case of soiled family honor.Story four, The Maharani's Pearls, is about an attempted kidnapping of the ruling Maharajah's wife with attendant threats on the lives of a British major's family in Northern India during the days of British dominance. Bess, as a 10-year-old is most prominent in the action. The remaining contents of the book consist of the first two chapters of the author's next production.Discussion: The first two stories offer kidnapping and murder mystery procedure/solutions that are mildly interesting. The third tale is more intriguing because it provides a look at a lesser known situation existent in the days of WW I England - the importance of `family honor' - and a technique of WW I warfare rarely mentioned. The fourth narrative is quite engaging. It follows the activities of a somewhat spoiled youngster as she engages in unsanctioned activity that actually `saves the day'. There is considerable action involving Bess and associated empathetic characters in a tense situation. The brief description of an older Indian Bazaar is quite descriptive. The excerpt of the 'new book' is sufficiently provocative.

I love Charles Todd books no matter how long or how short. I've read everything I could find that they (a mother and son) have written. The books are well written and clean. They do not use offensive cuss words in most of the books. In two they used my Lord's name disrespectfully so I did not finish those books. I was sorry they had lowered their standards.

Ian Rutledge & Bess Crawford, two of the best historical mystery protagonists around, are fleshed out a bit more with these short stories set during their younger years - before their appearance in full-length novels. Each story is a small gem of character, setting & story - the mystery is the icing on the cake.

What a good way to introduce readers to the Todd writing duo's two separate 1918-20s series sleuths, Scotland Yard's Ian Rutledge and battlefield nurse Bess Crawford. The first hundred or so pages contain four separate wartime stories, two starring Ian and and two starring Bess. The final 50 pages of this one contain the first two chapters of the Todds' most recent book, the Bess Crawford mystery 'A Pattern of Lies,” which came out 8/18/15

I especially love the Bess Crawford series and was pleased to find more hints of Bess's life in this volume and also to get a feeling for the other series by this writing team.I read these in a day while waiting at a hospital during a family member's surgery and it was a nice way to spend difficult time. The horrors of WWI and the French battlefield are well explored as is the changing culture of Britain as a result of that war.

I impulse-purchased this after enjoying three novels by the author (actually authors.). I was disappointed in these short stories. The characterization was not up to the novels' standards, and they relied on little plot twists I found annoying. Don't get the print edition. The book is available for much less on Kindle.

Te book consists of 4 stories (two each for Rutledge and Crawford), and a 2-chapter excerpt from an upcoming (in 2015) Crawford book. Stories were OK - not a whole lot of development - and the excerpt was a blatant marketing ploy.
