I bought this cookbook sight unseen. The recipes sound inviting upon reading. There are some nice stories and insight about cast iron care and seasonIng. The author seems knowledgeable. My only criticism is that are few photo's--just at the beginning of each section. There may be only a dozen in all of the 188 pages. In my opinion, this lack of photography makes it only a "fair" cookbook. More quality glossy pictures would have made this a stellar cookbook; thus 3 stars.
Wonderful cookbook to bring me back to my Southern roots. My husband hated brussels sprouts before trying the recipe for them roasted with bacon jam in this cookbook. Now they're his all-time favorite and he even requested them for thanksgiving. The shrimp and grits are to die for! Every single thing I've tried in this book is amazing, you can't go wrong. It's definitely a reason to bust out those old cast iron skillets that have been collecting dust. My whole family is getting this for Christmas!
This book is very informative on taking care of black iron cookware, and making it "cooking" worthy! Southern Cast Iron Cooking also has some awesome recipes to use in your cast iron cookware once it has been seasoned properly! Love it and suggest if you have questions about the proper way to get long life from your cast iron cookware you can find it in this book!
This cookbook has many of the regional cuisine recipes of the South including a great Brunswick stew recipe. I enjoyed reading the stories that went along with the recipes too.
This transplanted North Carolinian read this book like a novel. Imagine finding a book which contains many of the recipes you fondly remember from childhood and tweaked to make them better. If you hail from NC or SC don't pass up this book.
Great instructions on taking care of your cast iron and good tips on how to use it. The stories are fun. The recipes are alright. If you inherited a cast iron pan from someone or you just purchased one and want to know how to use it this book is a great place to start. Probably the best thing it does is explain that properly handled cast iron is great for cooking many things and requires very little effort to clean up and maintain. AS LONG AS YOU CLEAN IT RIGHT AWAY. Let food congeal and dry out on it for a few days and Deity help you.
Great Book but sad that there are no pics........really wanted that for this gift to someone
Love this cookbook. I love that it tells you which pans/pots to use, how to care for them, the backstory of the recipes...The recipes are great, we have yet to try one we don’t like. It seems like a lot of them call for cayenne and red pepper to add a bit of a southern kick so we just omit them if we’re not feeling it. The only thing I wish they had is some pictures of the good because I’m a fatty like that.
